This position is part of the Everyday Affordances of Nationalism sub-project in the Research Council of Finland Centre of Excellence in Nationalism Research in the Humanities (NARS).The appointment is full-time and located in the Unit of History, Philosophy and Literary Studies at Tampere University. The location of work is in Tampere, Finland.The NARS Centre of Excellence is a collaboration among four research institutions: Finnish Literature Society, Tampere University, University of Helsinki and Åbo Akademi University, combining history and cultural memory studies.The aim of NARS is to renew nationalism research in the humanities by studying how people’s experiences, emotions, and memories interact with national systems of meaning-making and how nations are constructed in human action.The Tampere University sub-project focuses on . We examine how the everyday shaped, negotiated, legitimized, and challenged nationalisms of the twentieth century. Our contribution lies in developing a historically grounded and materially oriented approach that emphasizes how national meanings were afforded and contested in people’s encounters with institutions, practices and spaces of welfare, childhood, care, and consumer culture. We aim to show how nationalism was not only lived but also experienced, re-evaluated and, at times, resisted across the life course and between generations by combining historical analysis with the analytical concept of affordance and the theories of everyday nationalism.Job descriptionWe are hiring a postdoctoral researcher whose expertise is in the history of the nation/nationalism with a focus on everyday nationalism in the nineteenth and/or twentieth centuries. We welcome applications that would bolster one or more of the above-mentioned research areas, but we will also consider other research foci within the history of everyday nationalism. Potential topics are not limited to specific geographical areas; comparative perspectives are welcome.The postdoctoral researcher will primarily focus on their own research and be an active part of the in-person activities at NARS. They will also be expected to teach and organize workshops and seminars.Key tasks include:
  • Undertaking independent research according to the research plan.
  • Disseminating research results in peer-reviewed publications and at workshops, seminars and international conferences.
  • Contributing to teaching (5% of contracted time) within the Degree Programme in History at Tampere University.
  • Applying for external funding opportunities.
  • Actively participating in the in-person activities of NARS in Tampere, and also in Helsinki and Turku.
RequirementsApplicants for the Postdoctoral Researcher position must possess a relevant doctoral degree in History or a related discipline, with no more than four years since completing their doctorate.Applicants are expected to have a record of research achievements, particularly peer‑reviewed academic publications such as articles, or book chapters, with ongoing active publishing. The successful applicant will demonstrate significant synergies with the research agenda of the Everyday Affordances of Nationalism team at NARS and excellent potential professional development and competencies related to the tasks of the position. Experience in teaching is expected, and experience in applying for and securing external funding is considered an advantage. Strong proficiency in both written and spoken English is essential, and candidates must display excellent teamwork, communication skills, initiative, and an inclusive, collaborative approach to work. The successful applicant is expected to be present regularly in person.We offerThe position will be filled as a 2.5-year fixed term contract starting September 1, 2026 or at a later, mutually agreed upon, date.The salary will be based on . The salary of a postdoctoral researcher starts from level 5. In addition to the basic salary, a supplementary portion of the salary will be paid based on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. A typical starting salary varies between 3900 – 4100 EUR/month.
