Simulation-based inference is one of the essential modern statistical tools that lies in the intersection of statistics and machine learning. It enables inference of complex real-world problems that have been impossible to solve with traditional statistical tools. In more detail, the research will be about probabilistic surrogate modelling combined with sampling algorithms that result in efficient inference with quantifiable uncertainty. Simulation-based inference has been applied to a large variety of applications e.g. in physics, economics, population genetics, epidemiology and the balance between theoretical and applied work will be tailored to the interests of the researcher.In this position, the candidate is expected to: * carry out high-quality research on mutually agreed topics, as well as publish / present results in top computational statistics and machine learning journals / conferences
  • complete a doctoral degree, including mandatory study credits required,
  • assist in teaching tasks and undergraduate supervision (up to 5% of total working time).

Partial remote work (e.g., 1–2 days a week) is possible, as separately negotiated.Requirements and further detailsTo qualify for this position, the candidate should have a master’s degree (or equivalent eligibility for doctoral studies) in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, computer science, or another applicable field by the start of employment (see below). A mathematical maturity and interest in theory-driven research grounded in mathematical modeling of physical systems is expected. Furthermore, the candidate should possess a solid foundation in statistical modelling and basic knowledge of machine learning; proficiency in Python; strong oral and written communication skills in English (including satisfaction of the language skill requirements of the doctoral program of the discipline; see below).Prior research experience is not mandatory but may be considered an advantage. The candidate should clearly state their motivation for pursuing a doctoral degree in the cover letter.The successful candidate needs to apply for and be granted a study right for a doctoral degree in the doctoral program of the discipline at Tampere University. A later starting date is possible provided a good reason, such as an expected graduation date. The latest possible starting date is February 1st, 2026, and to qualify for this position, the candidates need to have a master’s degree before the start of employment. The duration of employment is 4 years, corresponding to the target completion time of doctoral studies. A trial period of 6 months is applied to all new employees.We offer a starting salary of €2,738 / month for a starting doctoral researcher with later increases based on demonstrated PhD progress. The salary will be in accordance with (brand new salary tables only in Finnish at the moment).
