Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. We are looking for two excellent candidates to fill positions of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in the field of Software EngineeringThe positions are placed in the Unit at at Tampere University. The unit of Computing Sciences is a thriving hub of research and education that covers all essential areas of Information Technology. We investigate and develop methods, theories, and technologies for digitalized data and the information centric society. Strong mathematical, algorithmic, and computational thinking and understanding of social networks and human-computer interaction are common to all our fields. Software engineering, signal processing, computer engineering and information security are solution-oriented disciplines, and data science seeks to build models and extract meaningful information from large amounts of complex data. Machine learning, artificial intelligence and data-drivenness cut across all our disciplines. The unit currently employs 45 professors and 55 full-time teachers. Our 440 staff members work mainly on our Hervanta Campus located 8 km from Tampere city center, but we also have operations in Tampere city center campus and at the university consortiums in the cities Pori and Seinäjoki.Job descriptionWe are especially seeking applicants with expertise and a track record in software engineering and technologies. If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, based on your academic experience. While in the early stages of your career the main focus is on research, in later stages you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development, and student supervision. You are expected to pursue and supervise research in software engineering. Active collaboration with local, national, and global research partners, as well as industry is encouraged. You are expected to secure external funding for your research as well as nurture interactions with relevant stakeholders for societal impact. Teaching is an essential aspect of both positions, and we encourage especially research-based teaching that has also industrial relevance.RequirementsOur unit covers wide areas of computer science, but applicants for these positions should have their research and teaching focus in software engineering. Thus, the applicants are required to have a doctoral degree in software technology, software engineering or computer science, and a publication track record in top software engineering journals and conferences. In addition to forward-looking research, the candidates should have experience in collaboration with the industry. This includes joint research and experience in maintaining the work-life-relevance of the study programs.Passion for teaching future talents is another important requirement for both positions. Experience in curriculum planning, course responsibility and thesis supervision is highly appreciated. We foresee increasing need for research and education in the areas of embedded software, AI-driven software development and data management. The modern embedded systems are not only about low-level programming. They are inter-connected and distributed systems running on networks of intelligent devices. This requires new thinking – yet understanding of the underlying technologies. The new trends in artificial intelligence are disrupting the traditional ways of producing software, and our society urgently needs research on how AI can be used in various tasks in software engineering. At the same time machine learning models are increasingly integrated software systems. This creates important research problems on how AI is integrated into the whole system. We assume that the following areas are in the focus of our future research and education,
  • The use of AI for different software engineering tasks; best practices for the future, real benefits in using the AI, and risks and problems in using AI?
  • Integration of traditional software and AI models for real-life products; architecture and process issues.
  • Development of software systems for software-intensive systems; software-engineering aspects of embedded systems and distributed systems, including cloud, IoT and Edge architectures and solutions.
  • Data management, including data engineering, sharing and business.
  • Sustainability aspects of software and data.
We are seeking candidates whose expertise complement each other and unit’s current competences to work on the above goals. Especially, one of the selected candidates should have an understanding of software-intensive and embedded areas.Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:Assistant ProfessorWe require:
